Some of us old timers might remember the inflatable Santa astride the town hall clock tower, but the Zippy version of Father Christmas is a modern-day icon of Manchester’s Christmas lights. Image by TasfotoNL (via Shutterstock).

With Net Sixty Six SEO having Albert Square as a near neighbour, the joy of Christmas is only weeks away. As a curtain raiser to the highly-acclaimed Christmas Markets, is the city’s Christmas Lights switch-on.

This event draws in huge crowds as the honour is presented to a celebrity or pop star. This year sees the welcoming of last year’s winner of The X Factor, Louisa Johnson. The singer had a huge chart hit earlier on this year with Clean Bandit, called Tears and has seen huge success since winning Simon Cowell’s talent show.

As headline act, Louisa will be switching on the Christmas lights in Albert Square on 4th November. This will be then followed by a stunning firework display. Also likely to be in attendance is Key 103 DJ, Mike Toolan, Coronation Street star Brooke Vincent, and the presenter and comedian, Paddy McGuinness, of Take Me Out and Phoenix Nights fame.

Joining the line-up on the night will be girl band M.O (Modus Operandi) as well as local soul talent J.P. Cooper. His recent works include a cover of the Shawn Mendes song, Mercy. Any pantomime fans who are hoping to see Aladdin at the Opera House this Christmas will find a guest appearance from Cold Feet’s John Thomson. He will be playing the part of Abanazar in the production, and he will be making a special guest appearance on stage.

Finally, the cast of Billy Elliot will also be taking part during the evening. They can also be found performing at the Dancehouse academy on Oxford Road, with their unique panto performance.

In previous years, Shayne Ward, James Arthur, The Vamps and Scouting For Girls have switched on Manchester’s Christmas lights. The event is free and starts at 1930. Expect to see huge crowds and, if you can, arrive early. Access to the area will be restricted once the crowd at Albert Square reaches full capacity.

If you cannot wait till next week…

The intu Trafford Centre will be switching on their Christmas lights this Thursday (27 October, 1830 – 1930). Another X Factor entrant, Fleur East, will have the honour of switching on the lights at the Orient food court. She will also be accompanied by Key 103’s Mike Toolan and Coronation Street’s Kym Marsh.
